Jobing Description

Under general supervision by the Group Homes Supervisor in the Youth Services Division of the Health & Human Services Department, provides professional care and maintenance of the children assigned to their Group Foster Home for youth from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Function as two professional adult role models to meet the group living requirements of children with social and emotional needs who must live away from their birth homes. Coordinate the environment and adult actions in order to improve children's lives. Utilize events and processes as tools in providing a safe environment for children. Foster a group living atmosphere where all children participate in the planning and maintenance of the Group Foster Home. Provide a home like atmosphere for children utilizing professional standards, skills, and tools.

Care for the children assigned to the Group Foster home. Counsel children individually, or in a group, on an as needed basis with direction from clinical staff, Case Managers, and/or the Group Homes Manager. Assign and supervise individual chores at the Group Foster Home.

Participate in children's school activities by knowing teachers and counselors. Check youth's work for completion, thoroughness and timeliness. Meet with teachers periodically to ensure that the children are making progress. Teach and reinforce good study habits.

Supervise children and youth in residential settings. Model appropriate behavior for residents and staff. Serve as a role model for children using the family style treatment model. Coordinate information and activities with child/youth's Case Worker as needed. Document client information such as children's behavior in appropriate logs on a daily basis. Maintain confidential records and files.

Maintain a clean and safe environment in the children's Group Foster Home as well as maintenance of the building and grounds and housekeeping functions. Ensure that the physical environment is monitored for safety, cleanliness and attractive appearance. Conduct minor maintenance for the Group Foster Home. Teach children about the responsibilities of home maintenance.

Order food and shop for groceries and supplies as needed. Prepare meals and post menus for the residents of the group home. Plan individual and family fun activities that are entertaining and educational. Participate in the group activities taking place in the home(s).

Ensure that medications are dispensed as directed to the children/youth in the Group Home.
Complete forms, logs and reports on a daily basis. Gather and compile data. Write and submit reports. Monitor timelines, accuracy and appropriateness of all activities. Investigate, log and report all incident reports.

Transport children and/or youth to appointments, activities, school, court appearances, medical appointments, home visits, etc. as necessary. Schedule appointments for doctors and dentists.
Maintain parental involvement in medical care. Care for ill homebound children. Participate in children program staff meetings. Attend staff meetings and staff development sessions.

Teach children/youth specific social skills for appropriate public conduct. Practice appropriate skills with children/youth in order to increase learning and maintenance (e.g. role plays).

Skills / Requirements
• Education: Graduation from High school or a GED equivalent
• For enrolled Community Members without a GED, must obtain a GED within the probationary period. Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
• The following certifications are required: 1) certified in CPR and First Aid, 2) certified child care worker from a nationally recognized institute as well as being certified in a nationally recognized behavior management program for crisis management. Both certifications are taught by Community personnel, and classes are coordinated by Group Home Management.

• Experience: A combination of social/psychological education and work experience with children/youth equivalent to a minimum of 4 years of full time work is required.
• Applicants are required to be licensed, married couples and married for at least 3 years.
• Personal experience raising children is required.
• Must meet the physical requirements of performing and becoming certified with CPR and First Aid.

• Insurability: Must possess a valid Arizona operator’s license and be insurable under the tribal insurer requirements which are outlined as follows. Must be at least 21 years of age for all driving positions which require transporting others as a routine job duty. Driving disqualifications will occur if during the last three (3) years, the driver has any of the following convictions: for a felony; sale, handling or use of drugs; alcohol or drug related offense that is automobile related; three (3) or more speeding violations; more than two (2) speeding tickets in excess of 15 mph; one or more other serious violations. “Serious violations” are defined as: driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs; violation for alcohol offence during use of a vehicle; failure to stop/report an accident; driving while impaired; making a false accident report; homicide, manslaughter or assault arising out of the use of a vehicle; driving while license is suspended or revoked; racing; attempting to elude a police officer. Other disqualifications would include having a driver’s license suspended or revoked and involvement in two (2) or more chargeable incidents.

• Special Requirements: Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of this position, successful completion of an extensive background investigation may be required.
• Must possess a strong desire to be actively involved with children and teens and to share integrated life experiences.
• Must demonstrate the ability to welcome and blend the House Parent’s family with unrelated children.
• Must be of strong character, have solid values, have a good sense of humor and have the ability to be flexible and adaptable.
