JFCS History – Imagine Phoenix in 1935, the population is still small, but growing. Families from the East Coast are traveling to this open terrain, seeking opportunity and healthier climates. The Great Depression is still affecting futures, the second World War hasn’t started, the country is recovering from the devastation of the first World War. The Jewish community is growing, but few resources exist to assist the infirm, unemployed or widowed trying to raise children. Jewish Social Service is formed by three visionary women who belong to the Welfare Committee of the National Council of Jewish Women. Services included financial assistance, referrals to nursing homes, and in home care services.
